Pride clothing is an affirmation of our very identity, our place in our community and the world at large.īut our proud wearing of gay pride merchandise does more than speak of our own individual dignity. Now, when we hear the word 'pride' in reference to the LGBT population, its meaning is so much deeper than what the dictionary spells out.
Our world has come a long way toward accepting and appreciating the value of diversity in its many forms. In the decades since Stonewall, gay pride events have become a largely accepted part of many big cities' annual celebrations. It was the year of the famous 'March on Stonewall' protest in which gays fought back against violence and flagrant discrimination. Merchandise like banners, flags, buttons and pride clothing now proudly proclaim homosexuality for those who wish to express it, but before the pride movement, many in our community didn't feel so free to just 'be.'įor the LGBT community, '69 was the kickoff of a whole new attitude toward homosexuality. The summer of 1969 was a time of social trailblazing in many ways - music, race relations and other social causes, not the least of which was gay pride.
